  1. I think it is important for folks that enjoy computer games _(or 'gamers' if you want to be all young and hip)_ to recognize that they're just... games. They're not really designed to provide or satisfy all your social and/entertainment needs, especially long term. And with time, our needs can change.

It's tempting to make a game or gaming the focus of our recreational activities, especially if you've grown up with the interwebz and digital games. But really, most games focus on delivering a hedonistic experience, a 'quick fix' and as such train their players to hunt and indulge in such. Such fixes are of the moment and fleeting*

It's ok to move on. And obviously, we can move on and return.

And personally I'd say that, if you have to try hard to 'have fun' playing a game, I'd wager the game, at this time, is not for you.

_*..compared to an eudaimonic experience. For example, the self reflection that can occur much later, perhaps as the result of engaging with a particularly moving narrative._

  2. Games as a business: If ArenaNET can grab a slice of a potentially juicy market, they should. And gamers should support such action, if (if) profits from the market are invested into making GW2/GWX a better play experience.

Games as art: Yeah... it aint. That is to say, I firmly believe making games is art. Art informed by science, much like architecture, but still art. Once you start having to turn a profit there will be sacrifices made for the sake of securing said profits.

  3. 1: The game character can a proxy for the player within the game world. Being able to choose a gender your associate with can help the player project onto the game character and in so doing, better connect with their play experience when operating the game character within the game world.

2: Building on Point 1, enabling people to customize characters has been studied and shown to promote emergent narratives. Long story in a nutshell short, how you or I think and connect the events of play experience can build our own personal narratives, ones that the designers did not create.

Edit 3: There's also a whole package of tropes that digital games have picked up from their pen and paper cousins/ancestors, which are often included because designers and players associate certain elements with 'a role playing game'. Making a character, including choosing their gender, is part of this legacy.

    > I think what a lot of people forget is that a phobia isn't merely being "afraid" of something. It's a debilitating condition that can cause people to have real, life threatening symptoms. Sadly, having a "toggle" or something to turn off the modeling is probably not the answer. It's just not possible to "turn off" anything that could cause a phobic to trigger.

Granted. And a lot of people forget that phobias are also something that is treatable with a very high rate of success. Enabling people to avoid their problems doesn't help them in the long term. Helping them to deal with them does.

  5. To be clear - a phobia is not something that you 'have', rather than you 'practice'. That is to say, you can do something about it, with a very high rate of success. I'd much prefer energy was put into helping those overcome their phobia rather than build a game around helping them avoid dealing with it.

Now, obviously, if you've sought professional help, battled hard and still live a life wrecked by a given phobia then.. really, GW2 is the least of your concerns.

  6. Eh it exists but can be swingy.

A friend and I had an achievement in PoT bug out (as a rabbit, kill a certain enemy).

Took ages of real time. A real slog. Then we couldn't click on the thing we needed to complete the area.

Sent a report, screenshots etc. A long while later they replied, 'We couldn't replicate this bug therefore cannot help you'.

A quick google shows that we were not the only folks with such a bug.

So yeah, they exist, they're pretty good with account stuff but bugs and the like? A bit rubbish.

  7. I can run it and get 3 chests + final chest 90% of the time now. One thing to be aware of is that such a JP is much easier with a decent keyboard.

However, sometimes I find the instance I'm in is laggy - the dynamic elements pop in rather than smoothly move.

I find logging to character select and returning to get a new instance helps. Also helps to farm the JP.
