Careful Planning. Strategy. I find the 1 bigger AOE, while itself is stronger, however spreading 2-3 is more tatical as its not as easy to move out of the 3 if placed right compared to the 1. Without going into too much detail, I have a strat I use with this myself that would be harder to pull off (effectiveness wise) if I had the one.
