How should I deal with my old account?

I bought the basic guild wars 2 in 2013. For a lot of reasons I had to leave the game for a while . As I come back ,things have changed a lot . Can I play the game now wothout buying any expansions ? Will my charged account be identified as a free account ? I remember that I was located in BG world , if I reenter this game , am I still in BG ?

You can play the game without buying either expansion pack: Heart of Thorns or Path of Fire.

 

Your account will not be marked as free to play because you bought the core game.

 

You are still on BG server.
