Are the game download speeds supposed to be this slow?

Recommended Posts

Hi! I just got a new computer and have decided to play GW2 again. I have a pretty solid 100 Mbps internet connection, but the game has been downloading for over 3 hours now and is only at 42%. Download speeds are pretty awful, hovering between around 300 kb/sec and 2 mb/sec, much slower than I should be getting.

Anyone know of any tweaks that will bump the speed up? Technically I can play the game now but I prefer to have it downloaded before I do, as it could be laggy and incomplete.

Thanks in advance.

Be aware that the launcher downloads _and opens_ each individual file so download speeds fluctuate and it can take some time. You can always stop and restart the download, and it will pick up right where it left off (other than a quick check of previous files). The percentage will reset to 0, but of course it counts remaining files to be downloaded for each session.

Good luck.

Is windows/applications downloading a ton of updates in the background?

Is your HDD indexing? Both will substantially slow download speeds.

That said, thousands of files are very very small and they all have "Headers" that need to be checksummed. That's why it can be faster downloading one 10GB file compared to 10,000 1MB files.

I've been having this same problem. I recently am getting back into the game after 3 years so I have a massive update to download. I took my entire desktop to the library yesterday since I have hughesnet here at home.....speedtest said the library got 30 D/25U easy.....the launcher only reached speeds of 5MB/s max.....trying to download it now on my Wifi....max speed of my internet is 3MBs/s and I'm lucky to get 600kb/s on the launcher. Maybe there's a firewall built into the launcher or something. Who knows.
