Which profession fits my playstyle?

Not sure if I should put this here or in Players Helping Players.

 

But, I am a new-ish player trying to decide on a profession. I want a mobile profession that I can start combat from range, close distance quickly, and melee down. That’s over-simplifying it, but generally how I like to play. Good AOE would be a plus too.

Ranger fits that description best. It's also good for starting players.

I'd say thief, especially with de spec with rifle sword/pistol. Not gonna be much (or any) in terms of cleave though.

Ranger and Thief are great suggestions. Guardian has good "leap" abilities to close distance, and either scepter or, with the dragonhunter elite, a not great bow option.

 

I think those are the big three. Most of the other classes, for one reason or another, are not great choices for you.

Yes you'll love rangers new elite spec too soulbeast, core ranger is a good spec to play in the begining but but ranger really shines in pvp (has a low skill floor to be okay but a high skill ceiling when you get into the nit and gritty of combos and manageung your pet). Right now it has alot of flexibility and greatsword is the shit.

What game type are you focused on?

Revenant? Maybe? You can gap-close from 1800 units with phase traversal sw5 combo (2 instant teleport/shasowsteps effectively). Doesnt really have much for range damage though beside hammer, although hammer has decent AoE.

Really? Could be any profession... Except necro, necro suck at closing gap.

I'd recommand the flavor of the month (lot of months actually) profession: Mesmer.

Give Engineer a ....shot.

 

He has solid ranged options (grenade and mortar kits), but can also be very good at closer range and if it's melee aoe then bomb kit and holosmith specialization will both deliver.

Ranger or Warrior are both long-range and close combat which suits well for you.

And they are both really easy to learn.

Engineer has grenades kit, which is like a weapon set in utilities, you could even camp that, or as you get close switch to main weapon. Later you could even use Holosmith which has a semi ranged pistol burst and even again static discharge build which tosses electric sparks ranged. The nades are also AOE.
