Yeah the PoF story blows chunks.

HoT story was pretty awful, but this is much worse.

We are going in with the entire purpose of stopping Balthie, but we run in with no plan and no army? AND you spend the entire story running around without a plan or army. I guess your character knows that she is going to win via deus ex machina anyways so there was never any reason to worry about how she intended to beat Balthie without an army or knowledge of his weaknesses or how to turn him back into a mortal again or how to turn herself immortal to be on a level playing field.

At least in HoT we had an army even if we had no plan. Of course HoT had its ultimate stupid moment when you go into Rata Sum just to find out what you already learned from when you fought and killed a dragon in Orr, specifically that all dragons can be killed. However it doesn't follow from the study of one dragon that has a specific weakness (never specified) that all dragons therefore have one weakness and only one weakness. This is especially problematic considering that all dragons are so completely different. So you spend all this time to get into Rata Sum, a place you didn't know existed, just to learn what you already knew from a source that had no reason to believe it knew what it was talking about. The best part is that you never do anything with the information. You don't go running around trying to find a weakness, something that you should have been doing in the first place anyways because you had already killed Zhaitan and learned from that fight. We could also ask how Mordremoth killed your entire fleet at once but never mustered up the energy to kill anything else afterwards.

In both expansions you run around like a headless chicken for several hours and then achieve victory via author fiat. To me it felt like nobody put any effort or thought into the story. They simply did the bare minimum to get you to travel from one map to another on the barest of pretenses.

"It is the quintessential Deus Ex Machina: Suddenly, you are winning for no reason.

Victory was taken from you by writer fiat. Now it’s being foisted on you by writer fiat."

I like PoF story. Our characters was trying the best they could without a plan. Some situations you can't wait around until an army shows up. Sometimes you have to take the dive in the fire if you hear a person trapped in the house. That's what our character did with the story, they went in there blindfolded to find a way to kill him. Waiting isn't always the best option when something needs to be done now.
