Slightly weird question.

Recommended Posts

This thought just popped into my head that made me go "Hmmm..."

So. I know some of you guys are **S U P E R** rich, in the thousands of gold range. So maybe one of you would know.

What happens when you reach 9999.99.99 gold? (or whatever the maximum integer value is) Can you just not get any more until you spend some? Does the game straight up crash? Does it start getting deposited into your bank? Is there a hidden coin worth more than gold? Does Anet send you an award to your house?

Side question: How much gold does the richest player in the game have?

You can easily check the "leaderboard" of people that have the most of anything on https://gw2efficiency.com/ . Granted people have to opt into gw2 efficiency but it should give you a basic idea of how rich people are.

I don't know much about the maximum integer value is, but I think it is by far more than you think and likely not even close to being reached.

Yeah, but what would happen if someone _did_ reach that impossible number? I just think it's a fun thing to think about.

It depends how the system is programmed. Sometimes numbers will just roll over, or reach 0, or just continue counting. It depends on what kind of system they have in place that actually tracks the money and I lack the expertise to give you an idea on what would be realistic.

The interesting question is: Where does any future gold go from here on? If there is a limit, it means whatever that person sells now will not increase the number any further.

Yep, any future gold will be deleted. I guess that people buy stacks of expensive loot to store additional wealth the same way they used to buy ectos in the first game.

Fun fact, 200,000 gold is 2,000,000,000 copper which fits in a single 32 bit signed integer.

Yup, if they're super generous they could let you have an additional 10,000 gold or 100,000,000 copper before we get close to integer overflow dangers. They likely capped it with a lot of room to prevent overflow issues on very large transactions.

If a higher gold cap is needed, they'd have to increase the type to a 64 bit (signed) integer, which increases gold cap to roughly 900,000,000,000,000 gold with a theoretical maximum of 9,223,372,036,854,775,807* copper. This would, however, double the memory needed to store all the gold in the game. Depending on the amount of accounts that is a lot of data.

*(I would refer to this number as 9 trillion 223 billiard 372 billion 36 milliard 854 million 775 thousand and 807, but 9.223 * 10^18 is fine.)
