Okay, I'm not 'new' to the game, but last night something new happened

And that's perfectly fine, but this was a group thing in Nebo Terrace. How do I *not* give them buffs? I thought it was an automatic part of the game. This is why I'm asking. If it's possible to not give them, fine, but I kind of need to know how to or not to.
