Can't hear dialogue with 5.1 surround sound

Recommended Posts

Recently I hooked up my PC to a 5.1 surround sound system and everything sounds great except the cutscene dialogue from the center speaker. I have to position the camera to the side in order to hear the NPC talking. I can't do this with my own character so I can't hear myself talk. I can barely hear myself from the left and right speakers but not enough to understand what is being said. For NPC's directly in front of me, I have to zoom in all the way with the camera to hear them talk. I've experimented with the camera angles and the amplifier settings but nothing fixes the problem. I get music and environmental sounds from the center speaker, but no dialogue. Occasionally I hear myself when I walk up to a wall but it's not consistent. The sound options have nothing to address cutscene dialogue either so it's no help. I'd really hate to go back to headphones just for this game. Anyone have any suggestions?

That all checks out. When I'm in Lions Arch, the sound is perfect. I hear NPC's just fine and when I initiate the new story line events, I can hear the first radio call and my character's replies just fine. Its when I go to the new area that the dialogue goes silent in the center channel. My onboard sound inputs share the center speaker and subwoofer and I've switched the two just to make sure they are hooked up properly, but that doesn't help either. Something with the new area is confusing that center channel. I do have an old 5.1 soundcard that I'm tempted to install but I want to try some storyline missions with the core and HoT areas first just to confirm my suspicions. I'll update my situation soon.

I'm running with 5.1 surround sound, and have not seen any issues. I'd definitely run the windows audio checks to make sure each channel is what you expect it to be (this can sometimes require putting your ear right next to the speaker) - I've had odd sound issues if something is not mapped correctly.
