I just had (couldn't resist) to correct you on that, you're wrong. The game officially opened to the public for 3-day head-start on the 25th of August, 2012 (for people who pre-ordered or pre-purchased), and on the 28th of August, 2012 for those who didn't preorder or prepurchase...
The rest seems correct :)
And EoTM (as DEAD as it is now-a-days) is a "WvW 'megaserver'" and the way it works is; if your team is RED this week in "REAL" WvW, then you're going to be RED in EoTM too... So the ONLY way you'd be able to "meet up" with friends from other servers, AND "be on the same team"; well, they'd also have to be on a "home world" that is the same "color" that week. Then it *would* work ;) :)
But yes, WvW is literally the ONLY reason for "home world" now so, there's NO reason that EVERYONE shouldn't be able to organize on ONE specific server together, whether friends, guild, etc...

Everyone you saw in any map, was exactly from the same server. After some time, ArenaNet released "megaserver principle" - mixing up the entire region (NA, and second region, EU) playerbase into one "mega server", to get rid of low-populated mapzone instances.

Still, you can have ppl from different servers in the party (considered as"potentional spying activity" by hardcore WvW ppl), but they cannot join the same side, and would be by game engine considered as enemies, when they will meet themselves for example in EBG map in the case if they will be in the same match-up. Not 100% sure about guild participation, but i think enemies are not considered as "members participating in Guild Event" by the game engine.
