Guild Wars 2 Patch Downloading at 0 KB/S!

Recommended Posts

I recently decided to start playing Guild Wars 2 again, only this time, I had to re download the game. After traveling to Lion's Arc on my Level 80 character, I realized that I had not downloaded the full game, and that I had to download the map for Lion's Arc. And so I agree to go into a loading screen so it would download faster.

And I waited...

and waited...

and waited...

Eventually I closed Guild Wars 2 and decided to let it download, except that it would download at 4 mb/s for a while, then slowly drop down to 0 kb/s and start back up again. Even though it downloaded agonizingly slowly, I let it download over night, only to find that it had stopped at 26%.

Not only cannot I not access my characters, their map completion has been set to 0%

**I Have Tried...**

1. Uninstalling and reinstalling GW2

2. Repairing the client

3. Flushing DNS

4. Manually allowing GW2 through Windows Firewall

5. Adding "174.35.56.164 assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com" to hosts file in system 32

6. A VPN

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the advice. I tried Tunnel Bear VPN, but alas, to no avail.

Also, what did you mean by the "Options Panel" could you elaborate?

You could try a different VPN, or a different path.

Here's the info on Options: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Options#Streaming

I don't think that IP is valid, nor will likely any IP you find by searching since they change frequently.

To change the asset server, you use the -assetsrv option, like this:

-assetsrv 52.1.133.219

To lookup IPs yourself, open a command prompt and enter:

nslookup assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com 8.8.8.8

(or origincdn.101.arenanetworks.com)

Delete %appdata%/Guild Wars 2/Local.dat (and/or Documents/Guild Wars 2/Local.dat) and all gw2cache folders under the %temp% folder. This will cause GW2 to re-download the details on what it needs to patch. Also verify it's actually using the VPN and try different servers.

If it still fails, open msconfig, select the boot tab and check safe boot with networking under it, then ok and reboot. This will cause you to boot into safe mode with most non-essential programs disabled. Now try it. To return to normal, open msconfig and uncheck safe boot. If it worked under safe mode, you have software interfering with your connection.

Note that the displayed download speed isn't your actual download speed. It does other stuff between downloading files, which is factored into the speed, so if your drive or CPU is being taxed, it will drop down to 0.

For more information on what it's actually doing, you can use the -log option, which saves to %appdata%/Guild Wars 2/Gw2.log. It'll tell you if your connection is failing or it's downloading corrupted files.

1. Thanks for your help. I tried deleted the cache folders and local.dat.

2. I tried looking up the ips and pasting them into the hosts folder

3. I tried assetsrv

4. I tried booting in safe mode, but for some reason I could not connect to the internet to download it

5. and lastly I tried printing out a log to see what would happen

here it is:

Maybe you could tell me what this means?

Thanks in advance.

To confirm, it was safe boot with networking enabled? Some networking software (especially firewalls/anti-virus, though not Windows Firewall) will prevent you from accessing the internet under safe mode.

You can try using these commands in a command prompt (cmd.exe):

netsh winsock reset

netsh int ip reset

... then rebooting into safe mode with networking.

For a lesser version of safe mode, you can use msconfig to disable all non-Microsoft services and all startup programs.

> @"Wigsplitter.2017" said:

Nothing; that's just the startup. Any errors would have been after all of that. Let it run for at least 10 minutes after the download speed has dropped to 0, then close the launcher, otherwise it won't write whatever it had in memory to the file.

OK... I tried booting it in safe mode with networking enabled, however it would only take Ethernet connection so we can scratch that, since I won't be able to do that. I also tried those commands in the command prompt before I restarted in safe mode. What did work, was the log file, which is populated with this information after I let the launcher run for about 20 minutes. Here it is again:

You're still...

That IP isn't one of the patch servers, so it's just failing to download in general.
