Low FPS, high-spec PC.

Recommended Posts

For the past few months I've noticed that my FPS has been strangely low for the kind of PC I have. I've checked a large number of forums, asked some friends who are in the computer industry and stress-tested my PC countless number of times, along with changing the settings. All of them come to the same conclusion that my system should be able to run Guild Wars 2 without issue; my specifications are;

NVIDIA GTX 1080

I7-4820K, 3.7GhZ. (8 CPUs)

Direct X 11

Running in a 32Bit, windows 7 OP system ~ 60GhZ resolution.

I am able to run most other games at high/ultra settings with no problem, but unfortunately it seems Guild Wars 2 has become somewhat of an issue. It only came to a point of being totally unplayable in the Living World mission called "Frozen Out", where even on low settings I was getting the maximum of only 12 FPS, the minimum being 5. On other games, I'm able to run at approximately 80+ FPS on ultra, whereas on Guild Wars 2 in Divinity Reach I'm barely pushing past 50fps on high/medium settings.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

(Below is 3 screenies to give an idea of the issue);

Is there a reason you're using a 32-bit version of windows?

A 32-bit OS can only address 4Gb of RAM, and since HoT, GW2 has required more RAM. The main symptom at the time was out-of-memory crashes, particularly in DS. I don't think it affected FPS for HoT, but it may with the new things in PoF. GW2 is unusually highly CPU bound, so I'd guess system RAM can affect it more too.

Edit:

I didn't realize this until I googled it, but other hardware will reduce the amount of usable RAM... the higher the GPU memory you have, the more system RAM needs to be set aside for it... so with a GTX 1080, you potentially have very little leftover usable RAM.

(BTW... how much RAM do you have? With a 32-bit OS, any amount above 4Gb is effectively wasted)

I've noticed there's a bit of a discrepancy regarding my Windows OP system - going onto my msinfo it says its 64bit, as does dxdiag and Speccy. I've no idea where I got 32bit from-... How odd. In any case, my mistake!

I've got 16GB of RAM, on a - what i have now stupidly noticed - is a 64bit system, and not 32. >.< Sorry about that!

Hi, thanks for your quick response; I've updated all my drivers yesterday, checked my CPU isn't too hot - its running at around 50-65'c, which is fairly average for my PC on all games. I've managed to download GPU-Z and monitor that. I'm not sure if this is pretty normal, but the link added is my result (Apologies for the quality, i took the photo on my phone :x ). I've also benchmarked, stress-tested, as mentioned... Checked my NVidia settings are correct ect.

Don't know if it helps any;

I can't speak to your overall FPS problems, but the issue during Frozen Out is texture related, specifically around the ice crystal near the final boss of the instance. I had the same thing and found that if you trigger the game to reload textures (ticking or un-ticking "Best Texture Filtering" worked for this) then your FPS will go back to normal for a short while before slowly dropping again - doing this every 30 seconds or so was the only way I was able to complete that particular part of the story.

  • 8 months later...

I running the game on an i7, 1080Ti and 32GB of ram. I only get about 50 fps where my friend who's running an i5 with a 1060 and only 8gb of ram is getting 70 fps in the same area, with the same settings (not in battles).

I've tried everything to get better fps, battles usually drop me down to 30fps and my friend can keep a steady 60 with his setup. I'm not sure how such a difference in system hardware can have such a difference in game performance, especially when my performance should be just as good. I'm glad my friend can play the game with me, I'm more curious how a high end system can get half the performance.

Anything over 8 GB of RAM tends to be overkill unless you’re doing some serious multi-tasking.

Rather that compare i5 vs i7, compare the actual processor speeds.
