Grind

Recommended Posts

I get that there is a grind in each map, it's a good way to keep a map alive for a little longer, though the map still dies and things like collecting 700 Inscribed Shards is just a painful way to keep the map alive.

How about implementing a "weekly", that looks something like

example 1 "complete 25 dynamic events, view 15 vista's and harvest 100 nodes from any of the 4 starting zone maps"

example 2 "complete 25 bounties and 5 meta events from any POF map"

example 3 "complete all 34 world bosses"

etc.

This way people would cycle through all the maps / content in the game and we can do away with the grindy parts.

Exchanging 1 grind for another grind which you like more is a purely subjective change. There will be people who dislike being forced into weekly tasks.

There was monthly tasks way back and those were removed. I'm not seeing Arenenet re-implementing something similar which was already removed.

The 700 Inscribed shards are related to an Achievement (I assume), that has nothing to do with daily, weekly or otherwise repeatable tasks. It is a 1 time finite task which you suddenly want to change into a repeatable chore. There are already incentives in place to promote people to play different maps. Having both: 1 time grind rewards and repeat-able incentives beat having multiple repeat-able incentives. This way people can chose when to do what.

Alter the numbers a bit and I'm with you. For instance:

example 1 "complete 25 dynamic events, view 15 vista's and harvest 100 nodes from any of the 4 starting zone maps"

Well the dailies almost always include doing 3 events, viewing one vista and mining 3-4 nodes.

So on a per-week basis, you propose doing an extra 4 events (reasonable), an extra 8 vistas (a bit unnecessary) and an extra 72 nodes (not outrageous but a bit excessive to force this much farming).

Make it 25 events, 10 vistas and 30 nodes, and offer a minor reward that doesn't make it 'must-do' but is at least worth putting in a few extra minutes (say an additional 2 g on top of the daily amount), and I'd probably do it.

The main problem would be making the reward worthwhile enough that people will bother to do it, while avoiding making it so good that this becomes a grind that everyone 'has to' do.

This is just adding more grind. If I got a notice to complete 25 Queensdale events I would just log off. Event dailies are horrible enough as it is and they are only 4. It turns into a competition where players wipe out events as fast as possible to stop other players from even getting to them. Doing this in a starter zone could very well ruin a new players' experience. And the large number of Bounties and World Bosses would get tedious very quickly.

Over all i agree with this. When i see event dailies i instantly go to WVW and do the easy WVW dailies as having to race to events that have *tons* of other players doing them is annoying as hell.

It's been my experience that people will link to these events so that others know where to go. Some of them are timed, either actually, or by you reach your destination on an escort, and it's over, or by number of waves or morale of the enemy, depending on the zones. That isn't players trying to lock anyone out, that's the way they are designed. I will link events near me on a relevant map, even if I'm just passing by it, so that others can do their daily.

If they did anything, I think it would be nice to have an extra PvE daily option or two that are personalized, and try to get you to do something you haven't done before. Say, one is per-character, and pushes you to complete story steps or toward map completion. Another is per-account, and pushes you toward achievements you haven't done.

That's the exact opposite of grind, though, I guess.

This is an interesting idea! A "try something new with this character" daily!

Isn't that what dailies actually promote? Perhaps not in the LS maps but definitely in the Core Tyria area ... the dailies are always different places, different things to do.

I think the best way to avoid grind is to avoid special currencies, or diminish the need for them. The ability to exchange one currency for another does this but to promote all maps, I propose there would be an exchange created to trade special currencies for others between players. Well, it's a barter system and it would self regulate like the TP does by having the same structure.
