Fewer commanders = less joint action (what makes WvW most fun and what it's really about = teamwork). This is exactly what they find impossible to think of, or take into account. WvW stream each week is kill or be killed - totally NOT the game many enjoy where working together in teams is central to game pleasure, USA a culture of separate individuals - Europe a culture of groups. Any psychology textbook shows this - social psychology being totally different in USA compared with Europe, and ANET actually waste resources working collaboratively with USA researchers Such a shame - I hear that "in the old days" people would actually go to Lion's Arch and ask for help to defend a garri (used to take 10 mins to break into, seige being weaker, walls and gates stronger, builds less overpowered) - wonderful way of building server pride, must have been fun in those days ... That would explain why ANET are doing it, always bare in mind that their reason for doing anything is to reduce costs/increase profits Its *more effective*, not necessarily "cheaper". The proposed alliance system would allow them to both reduce and increase the amount of tiers, by increasing or reducing the world size to create or delete them during the shuffles. Its like having a system of 2 servers where one has 20% usage and the other also has 20% usage. Its much more effective to have 1 server with 40% usage and keep the other shut down until the first one hits 100% and you need to start using the second server. Thats how megaservers work. Everything is populated, its "cheaper" but it still has the capacity to expand with rising populations.
