I feel like that would've been cool however I know it would be a lot of work to let people choose that as it would lead to different story. It would have been a nice option, but I'm glad the commander learned from the mistakes of the past made in nightfall. If freeing him would have prevented the DC I got at that point I would have gladly done so. Then, I wouldn't have had to do those fights all over again.
