If Blizzard can update all of their games to use Metal, so can GW2. Blizzard even updated WoW (a game from 2004) from 32bit -> 64bit THEN to ARM 64bit and to use newer GPU API's then kitten, so can GW2. In the end, I think the reason being is that the GW2 engine is just too heavy and somehow difficult to fix/edit/change/whatever. > > I'm sorry for this rant but I really so love GW2 on my Macbook pro and iMac (when I get time to play it). The GW2 engine has been neglected for so long, this end of support is a result of that. They had 2 years to prepare for a replacemente to OpenGL.

Yes it works *for now*. But, and i quote Anet: > > *"In 2018, Apple ended support for the OpenGL graphics technology that Guild Wars 2 uses on the Mac. While games and other software that rely on OpenGL still work for now, Apple has made it clear that this will not always be the case in new OS versions. They have also stopped actively fixing problems on Mac OS related to OpenGL, including graphics hardware driver issues. "* > > It may not work for much longer. Apple stop fixing any problems with OpenGL on their systems, dropped support for it, and while it's still there in a kind of "legacy" capacity, it might not be for much longer. That's the problem, the "what next", not "how it is now"... Anet, and many others can't bank on OpenGL working and it's not a good idea to base your support on assumptions. > > As for the other Apple stuff like a new chip and Metal (i think?) API, that requires a re-write of the code to work with that. Anet just doesn't have the resources to do it. > It is what it is, and you have only Apple to blame. > > This is the price of exclusivity as opposed to inclusivity. Apple wants to have an exclusive club of users, devs and their ecosystem, but that unfortunately means that not everyone is invited. That's what you pay for. A cool secure OS and app ecosystem that's entirely under Apple's control with no chance of any "unwanted" software on it. It just so happens that Guild Wars 2 falls under "unwanted" because they use OpenGL. The kernel of MacOS is Open Source. OpenGL last update was 3+ years ago. Vulkan has a lot more future. Anet probably can't updated their own engine.

Long-time Mac gamer, invested much time, love and quite a bit of money in the game. > Yes, I understand that shifting the game to a sensible base (Metal instead of the extremely outdated OpenGL) would cost time and money they don‘t want to invest, or cannot. I also understand that their situation and the assumed number of Mac users might make this a „sensible“ decision. > What I do not understand at all is why existing Mac users have to be forcibly locked out of the whole game in mid-February. They might continue allowing us to play it, even if no further extensions would be provided or glitches would be fixed. Instead - they announce to completely lock us out. > Unless this changes, I will turn my back on the game and company before they force me to do it. Indeed, it is worst than expected. We could chose to deal with emulating x86 on newer Macs if there was no support, but they decided to lock out paying customers instead. I don't think Anet can even change their outdated engine and may be looking towards Guild Wars 3, which may support Macs. OpenGL was a great cross-platform API, but it was last updated on July 2017. It is time to move on, probably to Vulkan. Apple may even adopt Vulkan eventually, they do support Open Source ...some users don't know, but MacOS is partially Open Source and certified Unix.
  4. After 4 months, we still don't know if Guild Wars 2 will be supported on Macs with ARM CPUs.
