Ok thanks. I might consider switching, though to DE or DD not sure yet- the extra stealth just seems like it gives more decision making options during the fight whereas core feels a bit more all-inny because it suffers from less stealth than DE and less mobility AND stealth than DD.

Like, the extra tankiness is nice and all but it feels very single target burst committed so that it's harder to reset if the situation changes, and if I've blown my initiative and stealth already the tankiness doesn't save me any. Will probably wait and go for dp DD once i've finished spec.

So just overrall map awareness is the best weapon at hand in general. That's going to take me some time but it's good to get the clarification.

I'm probably at the stage where there's a bit too much unfamiliar info flying at me in a game to utilise this fully, but I'll definitiely keep it in mind and work on it thanks, and also like you say at the early stage I'm at matches are very volatile.

I think what I got from this for my bracket is that if nub lobbies are squabbling mid it can be good to full cap side nodes where possible, but if I notice my team is going fairly even it'll can be advantageous to add my weight after I have nothing to do. However like I say overrall map awareness is king and that "it depends" on a variety of factors.

What about if my team loses teamfights? I mean I know those will generally end in losses but maybe I can grab the occasional win if I know the right plays.

That dire/tb condi pd is basically what I currently run with core, partly because it's good for nubs (I can win a pretty good amount of 1v1s against players who should be better than someone only playing for a month, the rotation is so simple and destroys anyone who isn't prepared- get owned by some but that's normal considering I'm pretty new) and partly cos I'm poor and it gives me survivability while learning fractals without having to switch gear. If they're a target I can kill it's pretty obvious after my initial burst, but I also get outplayed by any thief with more stealth than I do (which is nearly all of them), but then again the extra tank gives me the chance to get away.

So you think this is a better version of the pd setup clearly? I just finished my DE spec and would be willing to work on the gear to switch (I only have a few ascended) if people like yourself can vouch hard enough.

I'm still looking for a PvP/WvW build to make my main, and am willing to put the time into practicing mechanics, in fact sooner the better which is why I'm asking.

  4. @kash.9213

    Thanks

I've been practicing without auto target, it has hampered my gameplay so far.. but I will keep at it.

I come from SC2 and Dota where I've put in 1000s of hours so I know that whenever you try to level up mechanics it always results in an initial drop off before you can get used to it enough.

I already switched tab to switch weapons so i put mouse 3 to tab targets, it isn't quite as crisp as a keyboard button so I may consider switching back although it will be an investment of a few days to reset my muscle memory to do so.

  5. I've been watching a tonne of Vallun and the gist that I get is that you should be looking for +1s as the priority, and then looking for decaps as a 2nd option.. However, probably because I'm inexperienced only 20 games played, I have times where I just can't find a +1 so instead of doing nothing I want to full cap.

Is this really that fundamentally wrong and should I just practice more on map awareness to find those +1s, are there circumstances where full capping is viable?

ALSO because I'm playing with probably less skilled players there tends to be a lot of mobbing going on where my team runs around as a 4, or the other team does- especially around middle. Can someone give me a run down on the appropriate actions to take in these circumstances? I get the sense that it's a very exploitable meta I'm in but don't know the way to exploit if that makes sense.

  6. I would prefer that thief were able to support in a way that makes sense for the vibe of the class.

One thing that comes to mind from my DOTA days is when I used to play Bounty Hunter support- you could put a track on someone which meant that you could see them for a period in the fog of war, and killing that target could get your teammates extra gold. So in GW2 you could add a skill that marks a target, prevents them stealthing (or at least you can see the mark), shows them on the map wherever they go, and grants buffs to your allies on kill.

That would revolutionise thief's role in WvW and PvP, and in PvE it could give you support potential in an interesting way.

  7. Hey,

As a thief you obviously want to utilise mobility and burst to isolate vulnerable targets, however I'm having a small mechanical issue that I would like to sort out. My current method of selecting target in the middle of fights is to right-click them, but I find this to be inefficient and awkward- firstly it costs a valuable split second to do, and secondly I'll sometimes miss the click especially if the fight is hectic (I currently run steal-stealth and infiltrator's-CnD as my gap closers on pd core which means having the wrong target selected or not being able to switch targets efficiently isn't the best). Even just the fact that I don't feel confident in it causes a split second of me checking if I have successfully targeted who I want.

This also costs me in situations where I'm outnumbered because it's just another factor that can create a mis-step that will get me killed.

Was wandering if a more experienced player could help me out with this particular mechanic- is there a better way to go about this so that I can be quicker, more efficient and more reliable in selecting/switching targets?

  8. OP: Only zergs, no other playstyles allowed please!

I mean it's not like thief is OP in terms of impact, that much is clear since most of the impact COMES from the zerg where thieves are literally the worst class.

I don't get this type of mentality- why don't you like variety in gameplay? All you want to do is faceroll into a big blob of players hitting your rotations every time like smashing your face into a brick wall over and over with no variables other than a little bit of skill and basically the numbers in the zerg itself? Is this how you approach your general life?

Like I'm not knocking zerging and mindflaying with a big blob of allies, it's really fun, but I don't understand how you can knock variety in gameplay. It adds complexity.

  9. It sounds to me like they're achieving exactly what they're designed to do- prolong content.

As a fellow new player I'm relieved that parts of the game have such high barriers of entry and long progression requirements.. because the second I feel like I've mastered everything in the game and I don't have any more really worthwhile targets for improvement to set myself (I mean there's getting better at PVP but I'll probably plateau at some point), that will be the second that the game starts to feel stale to me.

I'm sorry that it doesn't meet with your "want everything.. now!" personality (even though I already feel like the game gives a load away fairly easily, if I had it my way end-game progression would take even longer including with regards to gear, etc.), but I like value for money when I purchase things and having a game that has me driven for years to new goals is value, because it means I won't drop the game within a year to go buy another game.

  10. My earliest memories are from... TODAY!! I just played WvW for the first time after starting playing 2 weeks ago.

I haven't even got full exotics yet, just bought the cheapest exotic weapons speced for power, haven't bought expansions yet so I went in as D/P core with no mount. Damn if I didn't have fun though.

    Some highlights:

    - Being surprised when I started 2-0 for kills when I literally had no idea what I was doing (ended up on like 4-15), some dude wondered into the tail end of the zerg for the first one and was low enough to backstab, and the second one I jumped in on a low health guy at the edge of the fight- my hand was literally shaking from adrenaline.

    - Running around with the zerg and being largely useless on my power roaming build, using my bow of all things as I waited for vulnerable targets and mostly running away (when not dying).

    - Trying to kill a guy 1v1 while wondering why he was running away from me (doesn't he know I'm a nub?) and switching to bow to try to stagger him because that's how my brain works right now.

    - Leading the charge for the zerg on a guy running away using my thief mobility, and then immediately dying when he turned around because I didn't realise everyone else had given up.

    - Dying with the same teammate who I think was a fellow nub a few times over that I kept running into and developing an unspoken affection for him/her for our shared experience.

I rate the experience 10/10 - will definitely come back and be useless again

  11. Hi,

The way I thought it was explained from reading posts is that you pick your server when you create a character (dunnit, picked RoF EU) and then you play for that "team" in WvW.

But then when I tried WvW today I saw a pie chart of Far Shiverpeaks, Burundi Bay and some other server. RoF nowhere to be seen. Confused, I clicked Far Shiverpeaks because the others are DE and SP (assuming that means German and Spanish) and played for that server for a few hours.

I just looked on WvWstats and in the list of servers both Far Shiverpeaks and RoF are listed, but both show the graph with the 3 teams on the map I was playing (no RoF).

    Why is this?

Thanks in advance for any help.

  12. @Trianox.3486

I think I'm leaning toward thief and guardian, and then deciding between the two. Thief sounds really fun but I'll also be playing PvE modes and people seem to suggest it's sub-optimal for those, and I might as well create a less reflex/awareness oriented character for when I'm tired or it's late. Mesmer also sounds like an option but I never really liked illusion play in previous games.

I do want to press more buttons but I don't really consider playing set piano pieces to be what I'm looking for, coming from a MOBA/strategy background where I spent countless hours practicing mechanics anyway it's not going to be the challenge I'm looking for I don't think. A learning curve in when/how/what to do with a higher variety of rewards and consequences is a higher one in my book, although being a nub I suppose I'll actually have to try it out before I can really comment.

  13. Hi,

I come from a Dota & Starcraft background and I want to scratch that itch of having to press a lot of buttons and react fast to different situations. Looking for the class with the most complex button pressing (dodges, counters, bait plays, etc.) and delicate positioning requirements, but that also rewards these things with an extra advantage for high skill players. My goal is just to spam one class and just become a master at it for PVP/WvW modes. Basically the midlane position of professions for people familiar with MOBAs.

Playing Ele D/D PvE at the moment, and it's quite fun cos I'm improvising, but looking at the most competitive builds for it (weaver) even though there are a lot of buttons it seems like it's more about getting off combos, which are more about muscle memory a bit like playing a set piano piece to me. Am I wrong?

TLDR: I'm looking for a class with a lot of button pressing and improvisation in PVP modes, high skill ceiling with high rewards for skill.
