  1. I ran a carrion burn fb/cor/ and dh with sword. It was ok, fun, but in pve sinister was better dps and in wvw I needed a bit more toughness.

In general though I like the sword core burn guard playstyle, it feels light and fast with the low cd port on 1h sword. Plus I just feel like sword and shield guardian feels like the D&D paladin I've always thought of when I play guardian, whereas FB with Mace feels like a cleric.

    > As soon as they introduced Torment as a condition I was like "That's perfect for Crippling Shot!"... A longer cripple would be nice too. And remove the pet attack condition, they hardly hit anything anyway, just let us apply it.

I have to say, I like pets even though they have their issues, but I'm not a fan of our weapon skills causing THEM to do things. It makes it very clunky.

  3. Man you know, I logged in, looked at it, didn't think it looked much better than the standard mount, decided it wasn't worth the cost of two trips to star bucks for me and my wife (because that is literally how small an amount of money we are talking about) and so I didn't buy it.

I don't understand these people that get on here and pound their chests about the gem store. None of this is necessary to play the game, it comes across as very adolescent. If you are so upset that you can't afford it either get a better job or don't go out to eat like twice.

  4. I like the idea of concussive shot having a lower aftercast and inflicting a few stacks of torment or confusion. Otherwise I'm not of the opinion SB is terrible.

THROWBACK TIME: At least its not like back near launch through LS1 where SB did more POWER damage than Longbow and condi was for the lulz. I do miss power ranger though.

  5. Like Loon I also run Sc/Sh on my off hand. The aegis is nice for quickness procs (which I spec for with quickfire) and the dome is nice for extra breakbar. Scepter symbol is also short CD which I like, and I like to immob enemies in my burst area. I also like to ALWAYS have a ranged weapon, that said, sword/shield is pretty sweet with FB and the short cool down port on sword is pretty freaking nice.

  6. Dude, permeating wrath is AWESOME for FB, especially if you are not tome spamming. On a single mob you get 2 VoJ procs every auto attack chain, if you have three mobs you are getting two procs EVERY swing, add in quickness or quickfire to that... it's good. In my own personal dps tests w/o raid buffs the extra JoJ procs from PW on axe made up for not having zeal on - but I don't camp my tome and run RF much, I run the elite mantra. I'm sure in a raid boss setting there is a better option than Virt (like zeal 2/3/3) for dps, but the rest of the time virtues wins ime. Also remember that in a movement intense encounter you are losing 10% bonus dps from the symbol major in zeal.

As far as the first tree choices, as Arcaedus mentioned above, you can pretty reliably land a big burst with Unscathed Contender on, especially if you are using shield. In wvw, consecrations are some of our best abilities (WoR and PF come to mind) so consecration master is very good there. Lastly, the reduced CD on virtues, while not game changing, is still pretty nice.

TL;DR: Permeating wrath is good enough in any aoe situation that it alone is enough for me to take virtues over zeal in everything but a significant boss encounter.

DISCLAIMER: That said I don't raid or run max level fractals, I mostly wvw as that's my end game. The above is my experience in mid level fractals, dungeons, LS quests, and open world.

  7. I agree group battles are where the FB shines. As for the DD you saw... in a situation like that the defenders should have left one or two people to drive him off or keep an eye on him and then the rest leave and do something more productive, lol.

  8. You can roam on FB, but it can be a little slow. Dire/trailblazers works well. You new to guard, or just FB?

EDIT: saw you posting about fractals in another thread for guard. JI plus burning tome works really well if you get the drop on people, FB doesn't have many escapes though, and no DH leap, so if things go south, you have less tools to recover with imo.

    > Keep in mind, the original question was about giving barrier to core specs and that's what Karl responded to, so we are talking about core guardian getting barrier, not DH or Firebrand.

Core guard getting it would be the kitten imo. It would give every different build of guard an even more distinct playstyle, and I think it would open up alot of build potential. I think if core guard gets it though it has to be on virtues, otherwise you could get it on DH or FB through traits or utility skills. I do think shouts would be a cool way to get it, but honestly, shouts are already pretty good. Core guard, imo, should be our bunkery defensive spec, DH our high dps spec, and FB our hybrid spec.

I would love running an AH frontline guard with barrier in WvW.

  10. I am having great success with tomes in WvW, even in a semi coordinated pug without voice comms. I roll in with f3 out, I put 1 on the tag to get him through the initial push and when the melee FFA starts I drop 4 and 3, I just rotate those until I'm on CD. After that I either go on the offensive or start dropping heals with ToR 4 followed by 1 spams until 4 comes off CD. I'm rarely on voice comms but dropping 5 then 4 and having a condi rev drop their blasts in the field would be nice. The burning is nice from TOJ but it is my least used tome, I abuse ToC procced for quickfire pretty frequently.

For mobility, I haven't had much problem. I survived a three way fight in SMC lord room the other day, and pretty much just rotated my tomes the whole time. Usually when I die to lack of mobility, for me, its cause I got lag blob bomed, or wasn't watching the tag well enough. I sometimes swap out my thrid utility for Merciful intervention or JI for extra mobility, but not often.

Anyway this is just what's been working for me, and I wanted to share. I also think on a build with burning that is in a group that pushes well staff is still very good up close. That said, I also recognize there seems to be a lot more pirate shipping going on, so I find myself camping scepter alot outside of tomes.

  11. I wouldn't mind barrier on Guard. I agree staff having a heal (as well as ToR 1 having a small attack with slow, and ToC 1 having a small attack with cripple or weaken) would do ALOT for the guard and Firebrand. I guess it would depend on how they implement it. Barrier would be a nice addition to a support toolkit, but I feel like the staff and those autos on tomes would be more important. If they add barrier to Guard I hope they make it a grandmaster trait or something. I'd prefer it as something you build or choose for (that is not part of an espec) rather than just something we get all the time, unless they find a way to make it part of a virtue.

  12. I don't feel like i give up that much sustain for the quickness mantra - i mean, on demand quickness (especially if also traited for quickfire) is just that good, especially if paired with the stability mantra. Resses, stomps, burst, quicker tor heals. I would like a little more range on axe as well though, and I prefer axe to scepter.

  13. > @Ahlen.7591 said:

    > Well the real problem with the nerf is it makes it feel kind of pointless to go into the tome in the first place. And if you aren't going into tome why be FB?

You know what I think would fix that is if you didn't have to stow the tome to get the tome reset from the trait. Not being able to frontload so much burning makes me more hesitant about going into the tome, mostly because i still trait quickfire and if I don't get the reset I tank my dps.

  14. Actually in the last battery of tests I remember reading that axe was a slight dps increase over scepter, scepter was just easier because of symbol uptime. Add to that that the cleave on axe and it's synergy with PW.... If anything I'd say just increase the range slightly and the cast speed of the symbol. I'd also say that unrelenting criticism should apply the bleed to all 1h weapons. It was bugged for a bit and was working with scepter, which was nice.

  15. I actually did not care for druid, and switched from maining ranger to guardian when HoT came out. I also used to run zerk 1h and sb back when sb actually did better power damage than longbow for those of you that remember that. I hate the new 1h sword animation, I never had the issue with the 3rd attack in the old chain that others did. I actually am having a lot of fun with dagger/torch and traps, and I've never enjoyed condi ranger before.

I use smoldering on both weapon sets, then corruption on one and bursting on the other.

Gold is so hard to come by in Guild Wars 2. Atleast for those who theorycraft and make builds all the time like us /ponders how to get more gold.

That's pretty close to what I'm looking at. I'm debating if I want to invest in healing power any more than from my celestial jewelry, because I do find ToR incredibly useful during sieging and zerg regroups. Most likely I will not, I find ToC and ToJ to be useful more frequently. I have considered investing in some concentration gear, and if I swap axe for staff then I may do that.

If I were going for a more supportive build I would run this:

    http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vVAQNAW7en8ABNCjtCBODBkCjFLCb/c2OnnYBgDwDILDUeSPA-jVyCQBFUdAKcEAAwBBIPaG8kKPHSJ4J2fILKN+iysAAIAO6RP6RP6R76G9oH9oH9oH9oH9olCgIdaA-w

I didn't adjust armor because I haven't given it alot of thought - I just don't have the money or time to have three different sets of gear for 3 different toons, lol. It probably bears mentioning that PF gets frequently swapped out for WoR, and SYG for Retreat. When I am alone I run Shelter, with the zerg I often run RTL. I sometimes use Spirit Shield, but usually I will just use ToC. I like to drop TOC 3 down on our downed players to protect our revivers. Actually that build looks fun and I will probably try it this week.

  18. For healing others i still prefer RTL, and for myself shelter - the damage prevention of shelter is worth alot of healing.

ToR I agree needs to have a blast finisher, and I'd like to see number one have a slightly higher heal, but also a 5 target enemy debuff with a minor amount of damage so I can tag enemies I'd prefer chill or slow. I'd like to see the same thing done with ToC and have it be cripple and/or weakness.

That's alot of support to have on top of solid dps. BTW ToC let's me still contribute to dps when specced to give quickfire with stab and aegis.

In wvw I swap my non-PF/mantra of lore skill alot, in pve I use the quickness mantra or mantra of flame. My gear is also more viper/carrion/sinister/grieving and less dire. Running virtues over zeal I have not actually noticed ANY single target dps loss, and my aoe is WAY better. Plus I love consecration mastery and unscathed contender. I've had alot of success with this build in the new pve stuff and wvw both.

This, or even a utility skill that was a blast finisher - hell make spirit shield a blast finisher.
