How well should I be able to run guild wars 2?

Hi All

 

Just wondering how well should I be able to run guild wars 2 I have a new computer with the specs as below.

 

Intel® Core™ i5-7300HQ processor

RAM: 8 GB / Storage: 1 TB HDD & 128 GB SSD

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050

 

I seem to get like 100fps at times then randomly it will dump to around 2-15 and make the game unplayable I have heard other people have had problems on EU servers too?

Personally I haven't had those FPS drops, but I'd suggest putting gw2 on your ssd as the game is very CPU and HDD read speed dependent when it comes down to loading stuff which might explain your fps drops if the game is getting bottlenecked trying to load textures/characters.

Depends on the in-game settings, the game mode, the number of players around you, and the activation of skills etc..etc.. Just standing around in a vacant wilderness will give you vastly different fps numbers than standing in a populated lions arch or running in a WvW zerg.

 

With an i7 6700K and GTX 1070 I can drop to 20 fps in zerg fights for instance.

Yeah the ssd doesn't make a large difference, the fps drops happen anywhere I could be in the personal story for example and it go to 2 fps stutter then go back up to like 100. It's frustrating as it really gets in the way of gameplay. I have tried reinstalling and repairing.

I have similar rig and have encountered similar issues as OP. FPS drop does seem to go hand in hand with Ping spike. I can't tell if there were any other graphical option changes added/modified with PoF, but these issues do seem to have started post PoF for me.

It's really strange isn't it, what graphics setting do you run at ? What FPS were you getting pre PoF?

Be sure you have not set the "shadows" setting to maximum. Nvidia cards have trouble with the highest setting.

Sounds like some gpu or cpu throttling issue to me,a shadow setting shouldnt drop your fps to 2 for w/e reason.

What's the best thing to do about this? I have played others games and had no problems.

With that big of FPS drop this sounds like a hardware issue if this is a new system I would check and see if the video card is seated properly in the PCIe slot also check your power management setting it could be set to low for the game.

I might try that gpu testing :) It's a laptop I can't imagine it's a problem with any hardware as I have ran other games ok..... I have turned vertical sync on and my CPU usage has reduced dramatically in task manager down from like 70-80% to 35-50%. I am hoping this makes a difference?

I don't think that turning on VSync will help here. It will indeed save you some CPU usage, but only in case you are already rendering more FPS than your monitor can display. (Usually 60) When you drop to like 2-15 fps, VSync does nothing.

Things like this are best served when we can duplicate and repeat the given issue. Can you cause this frame drop with the exact lowest graphic settings including the field of view on at least its default setting (not above) + default monitors fullscreen resolution?

Yes I can cause it. It happens intermittently does not matter really what I am doing in game. I have tried twiddling with the graphics settings all on high, medium down to low field of view default etc it seems to make no difference.

I ran the graphics GPU testing and didn't appear to have any problems...

 

Have been benchmarking with Arkham Origins at 80 fps average fully maxed out. (I know that's not the most demanding game in the world) just happens to be what else is on the computer ATM.

 

Is this really just GW2's poor optimisation?

I think it's GW2 poor optimisation indeed. In some places, I get a neat 40-60 FPS, but in some others (Elon Lily, Sahil casino...) it drops and stutters a lot. I sometimes also have huge drops in personal story. In the meanwhile, I can play TESO in almost full settings (my laptop is getting old) without too much of a hassle, thank you.

Guild Wars 2 should run just fine at your system. The only exceptions are in situations where the screen is being bombed with effects. Like in the Battle of the WvW Zergs and massive world boss battles / massive dynamic events. Then GW2 performs poorly and slows down considerably. (CPU bottlenecked)
