Danikat.8537 Posted November 27, 2017 Share Posted November 27, 2017 If you only play PvP then the only benefit you'd get from the expansions is access to elite specialisations (and maybe new stat combinations, I know you can't get them for PvE without owning the expansion but I'm not sure about PvP). You can definitely keep playing without them, but you will find your options for builds limited. It's true that there are some limits, but you can have a good experience. TEKnowledgy.1760 Posted November 27, 2017 Share Posted November 27, 2017 Do as pretty much we all did. For us older players we played 3 years on base tyria but HoT was needed by 2nd year passed. So what im saying is enjoy core do all you can or want to do then start hopping on the expansion band wagon. Only limited if you use the elites. In some builds i prefer my core traits over elites. Mounts are nothing big you don't need them in any of the core tyria parts. I do recommend both expansions, but only after you've got bored of core tyria and looking for little more to explore or more goals to set. HoT is huge step up in difficulty if you havn't learnt your class well you will get destroyed by the mobs there. PoF mobs are tougher than hot in some ways mainly health pool some branded and forged can tear you a new hole if you don't know your classes well though. Not 100% sure but I don't think you will have access to gliding without HoT. If that's not the case, make sure you go into the traits panel and put points into it to be available. If you don't see the trait line then you need HoT. You will also not be able to interact with shield generator. You can buy them, build them, refresh them but use none of the skills. When I found out a month ago about how to get the glider in WvW finally we tried to show one of my friends how to get to the upgrade tab to put it on. But at same time if you don't wanna run elite builds then no better or worse off right? You'll still be in versus against them with or without the expansions. Even with them don't mean you will perform any better or worse. I mean if you doing fine and content with how those areas of the game feel to you, I wouldn't worry about it. Just reconize the option to try something new is there and waiting for your purchase. Having the trait lines and elite specs can be advantageous in pvp/wvw mainly due to the fact you'll understand how the elite specs operate correct? But there could be ways of learning this stuff even without it, like reading build guides. Alotta people tend to use guides for builds in competitive play, all those guides are open to you for observation and study for educational purposes, even if you don't own the expansion hehe. ;) More than one way to skin a charr. It's ok, we once found a server gliding from the spawn point to a tower... Raven.1524 Posted November 27, 2017 Share Posted November 27, 2017 Xpacs pretty much give you more versatility and builds to use on different situations. Core specs aren't really bad, actually.. If you know how to use them, and get a good combination in a squad, core traits are still awesome. Firebrand is great, but sometimes you just wanna be the tankiest core guardian and banish corpses with a hammer till the other corner of the map. Lipzipper.3160 Posted November 27, 2017 Share Posted November 27, 2017 You only limit yourself, and arenanets ability to enhance the game by not buying the expansions. i'd also have to point out that this game was never meant to be a only PvP experience. Sure, quite a few people do play as such, but that are the players that accept that this is mainly a PvE game which what happens to have great groundwork for PvP. You need the elite specs to play META if you care about such things. The elite specs are an expansion thing, buy the expansions, have fun. They are REALLY cheap, way underprized.
