Can't do story with friends even though we are partied up.

A friend needs help in part of the new story Long live the Lich.

We are partied up and he will start the story and be by himself in the story.

I have seen videos of people doing it partied up and are able to play together

but I can not no matter how I try.

 

Is there a solution?

You both have to be standing in the same map instance to enter a story instance together. When a member of your party enters a story instance, you will get a pop up notification asking if you want to join them; that will only happen if you're both together in the map before entering. Are you both in the same map before your friend enters?

Maybe resetting the instance might help?

You also have to be in the same region. If one of you is on an EU server and the other is on an NA server you can't play together.

We are both standing next to each other and can see each other but the pop up window never appears. Yes, we are in a party with each other also.

We play together all the time. We have done stories together several times. But this one does not work the same.

Odd. Which specific instance are you both trying to do together?

Not sure how to reset an instance.

The final part of the Lich. The battle with Joko. Even tried the hallway and 4 lazer puzzle.

Nothing happens no popup to accept the join each other.

There could be some issue with how that instance saves your progress in the traps/laser puzzles. Have you tried being the one who enters the instance first? That might fix it.
