How to start raiding?

Some background, I've had GW2 since launch, and played it off and on. I missed season 1 entirely (was busy raiding in other games!), but have kept up on the story since then. I've also kept up, or been 'politely informed', that my bear-bow ranger was.....well.......let's not say any more about it, ok???? hehe.

 

So now my main is an ascended-geared, min-maxed, condi-SB DPS (also, working through the collections for the first legendaries). And I understand the rotation, but am certainly less than 100% perfect at it. I can also switch him to druid, but....gear and competence is....a bit above "hmmm, this button is off cool-down, so hit it!!"

 

To be honest, even having raided in other games, at reasonably high levels as tank, heals, and DPS, and found all enjoyable, the idea of pug'ing a raid in GW2, without knowing anything about the fights before, is....beyond intimidating! Even if I watch the fights before on youtube, and read guides online..........I'm probably going to cause your group to wipe.....more than once.....until I truly understand the mechanics.

 

So...how do I start? Do I need to make a completely separate alt account that can PuG every day, all day, that nobody can trace to my "real" account? Or do some PvE/raid/end-game oriented guilds have some recruitment / training?

Find a guild that runs or talk to any of your friends should they play and run with them.

 

If you are determined to Pug it, then play by the Pug's rules. If they say they want 200KP then don't lie about it, just accept it and move on. If you can't find a reasonable group create your own and be honest that you're brand new and looking to learn with others.

But........so far 'Practice Runs' start at Escort. As condi ranger (at the time), I killed those pats, no problem.......every time.

 

Once I saw....Idk a worm-like boss with shrooms, with a random team member having a debuff that meant the boss would follow him along a path, but the raid leader basically said "and now we all die" in voice chat....

 

Also, there was a boss that reminded me of "Simon Says", from the 1980s, but after getting him to 5%, in 3-5 tries.......all the "experienced" people had to sleep.

 

Idk...I think I am between 'practice runs' and "raid kills", and I'm not sure what I need to do to make the transition......

If you play in eu server, you can add me and send mail to me. Our Guild does training runs with discord. Thats how i went from casual player to "raider".

 

Our Guild organize training raids about 3 Times/week usually at wednesday, friday and saturday or sunday around 18.00-20.00 server time

I'm not EU server, I am MST ( UTC -7), so I think 1hr from server / PDT time? If I understood you right, your raids are at 1700 my time.....and I can arrange for that, a LOT!

You can join training discord/guild. As for bosses try to start with escort (w3b1) cairn, mursat overseer samarog (w4b123) and VG, gorseval (w1b12). Those are considered easier bosses. The one you are refering to is sloth and that is quite hard (especialy for begginer)

Yeah. If ur not sure (coz im not) :D u can check ur server time from ingame minimap Clock. Set it to server time from options :)

Don’t forget to look/read up on guides for the various bosses/encounters.

Unless your Commander is truly unreasonable, as long as you explain that you are well-versed in the mechanics of the fight, most people tend to be willing to at the very least give a Raid newbie a chance at proving themselves.

Please take Tex advice, ideally join a guild which does training runs (doesn't have to be a hardcore raid guild).

 

The benefit is in multiple areas:

- you get to know new people

- the entire raiding process is usually more fun

- you get way more leeway in making mistakes

- you can ask questions and get friendly answers from guild mates

 

PUG raiding as entry is very tough and frustrating.

OC on EU does raid training for most bosses as well. Thats how I entered the scene back then.

I can only echo what has mostly already been said. Try to find a guild offering/advertising training runs in- or out of game.

It's not easy and usually requires a kind soul trying to organise the thing who already knows what to do and some searching for that on your part, but at least for me personally, progressing with such a new training group from attempting one or two bosses to eventually transitioning into a static going for full clears was very satisfying.

 

Preparing multiple characters with raid viable builds doing different jobs, putting some hours into training the rotations and looking at guides for the encounters itself definitely helps.

You should join training runs or host your own.

 

As I worked my way through the bosses I did both. Sometimes you find an lfg like "gorse training need 1 dps" but sometimes it is hard to find training for some of the harder bosses like matthias or soulless horror. Nothing wrong with watching videos, reading guides, and tagging up to lead your own training run.
