Classic Guild Wars on sale - more fun than expected and Hall of Monuments achievements

I bought the original Guild Wars on a whim to see if I could knock out some Hall of Monument achievements - and have to say I'm having a complete blast. Love learning the background lore (PoF makes SO much more sense now!), the gameplay is way better than I expected, and I was surprised to find there's still a great community there.

 

Highly recommend these two guides if anyone else is considering the 50% off sale on Steam:

Why is the sale on GW1 50% off on steam & NOT directly through the Arenanet as well?

It was the same during the summer sale.

The PoF sale is through the Anet shop.

Had GW1 for almost 4 years before I got properly into it (hadn't worked out henchies on first try!) and am now loving it.

 

I do think the suggestion you can get 30/50 Hall of Monuments in 30 days (as suggested in the guide) is way optimisitc tho. Starting out from zero it's a slow process to accumulate the cash, skills and gear you need

I started playing through GW1 for the first time the last time everything was on sale. I started trying to follow one of the many guides to Hall of Monuments, building a certain type of character and playing a certain type of story, but for some reason it felt stressful focusing on that.

 

So I created a base game (Prophecy?) Ranger (Hunter? Bow+Pet Person? Not good with remembering every games names for things) and started playing and was having a good time. I was going pretty good for a few months, but then stopped a few months ago, and haven't got back into it, but keep thinking about it. Mostly a time thing for me, as I play this game a lot, and maybe an hour or so in another game.

 

It's fun when I get to play. Remains to be seen if I'll get any HoM stuff done, but I'm enjoying the lore and the story and the zones and crafting armor and weapon upgrades and such. It's a very fun and playable game still! Not (really) having played it before.

in case you're struggling with titles, complete the chapters, do the sunspeer title and go for survivor. (trough the HM wurm run, safest way since they don't move from their spot)

Is the original Guild Wars Mac friendly?

It’s not Mac friendly, I brought it thinking it would be and I found out it wasn’t. Save your money.

It's not obvious on the Guild Wars store, but it's best to buy _Guild Wars Trilogy_ and _Guild Wars: Eye of the North_ to get all the expansions. I bought _Guild Wars Platinum Edition_ to start and couldn't add the other expansions because they all include Prophecies and I already had Prophecies installed. GM added the access keys next day on the back end through a support ticket, so no complaints... but hope this prevents the problem for someone else.

 

EDIT: I bought the game off the Guild Wars site before the sale; may not be an issue for people buying it on Steam.

I bought the expansions November 13th and on the 25th my HoM is at 13/30 with my usual after dinner (work-full-time/keep-the-family-happy) gaming times.

I just downloaded GW1 again after a few years away and I'll be looking into getting points in the Hall of Monuments. I had lots of birthday Pets to gather on my characters and I now need to do some quests there to get Tapestries apparently. I'll have plenty to keep me occupied!

Update: Three months later and just completed Legendary Guardian title (completed all campaigns on normal and hard mode). Have 23 HoM points, just need 7 to collect all GW2 skins and pets, which should be quick from here.

 

Still the most fun I've had in a game in years - love the unique gameplay and community in GW, but doesn't diminish my appreciation for GW2. 10/10
