Character's levelling - question ???

Hi! I'm a new player. I've been playing the game for some time now and I've reacher lvl 10. Every time I levelled, a message popped up telling me what rewards I got. Is there anything else I should do when levelling? For example, in many other games (such as based on AD&D - Baldur's Gate), you increase your character's attributes when levelling. What shall I do when I level in GW2? Is there anything I should increase manually or do things increase sort of automatically? Frankly, I looked around I didn't find anything I could increase...

Early lvls you are unlocking basic skills and abilities of your character and profession. Later you will be getting hero points (which do not come only from lvling but also from some other activities in the world) with which you will be unlocking specializations and their traits with which you specialize your character further.

But the progress in the game is not only limited to lvling or not nearly as much as in your example but has also many different aspects; masteries, achievements, stuff and equipment you gather in the world. All of these can have impact on what your character can do.

In the end do not worry to much about your stats when leveling and focus on fun you can find in the game. You can not ever screw up your character by picking or not picking something. All the traits and specializations can be changed any time in the game for free once you unlock them. Keep in mind that different weapon sets and skills you choose to use from your pool of skills can greatly change the way the profession is played.

As you're leveling up you should have been getting opportunities to collect Hero Points. I think you may also have been receiving Hero Points during your leveling process, if not you will be. These points are used to purchase new skills and eventually traits. You have to manually unlock the skill and trait lines by spending points on them. When you finally unlock traits you will also have to manually apply the trait lines you want to use and choose which traits you want from within those lines.

Other than that you only need to pay attention to your gear.

From level 11 onwards you'll gain access to utility skills which go into 3 of the locked spaces on the right side of your skill bar (the 4th locked slot is for an elite skill, which is similar but more powerful). At level 21 you get access to specialisations, which give you passive skills (called traits). Both of these cost hero points to unlock. Every few levels you'll get more hero points to spend, and you can get more from challenges you'll find in the maps.

Eventually it's possible to get more than enough hero points to unlock all the skills and specialisations, but while you're levelling up it's a good idea to look at what's available and try to pick the ones you think are going to be most useful (although I also recommend experimenting with different builds as you might find you like some of them more once you've tried them).

You'll want to upgrade your equipment when possible too. Some people will buy a full set every 10 levels or so, but I've always found I could get by just using what I got as drops and story or level rewards. Later on you might want to think about getting a set with matching stats and adding upgrades like runes but it's not really worth worrying about that at lower levels because levelling is relatively quick in this game so you'll end up replacing it before you've gotten much use from it.

The game will largely try to give you information when you get something new as you level up.

At level 10 you've been unlocking weapon skills so far (buttons 2-5).

You'll get a bit more, like hero points (11+), weapon swap (around 10 forgot exactly), Utility skill slots (11, 15, 19), Elite skill slot (30 or 31), and Trait lines (21). Those require you to make choices and put something in.

So just relax and enjoy, it comes bit by bit as you play, and most of the early game is forgiving enough that you can forget it for a while anyways. So just take it as it comes, and if in doubt or wanting more information use the /wiki command, for example: /wiki traits

The wiki is an extremely good resource if you want to figure out something, need the numbers or mechanics behind something etc.
