Suggest: Wiki game guide pages for new or returning players

Recommended Posts

I've been here for 7 years. I get the feeling that any new or returning players are OVERWHELMED by the number of choices and paths to take in Guild Wars 2 after 7 years of content additions.

It would be nice to have a brief link to mention in map chat like /wiki RangerGuide or /wiki gw2changes.

I just typed /wiki ranger. It only gives a superficial overview. It would be nice if it linked to a guide page. Perhaps a game guide page could be developed for each specialization giving guidance while avoiding information that may be outdated like the detailed build and skill layout.

Similarly, with so many returning players it would be nice to have a non-spoiler page with an overview of added features listed in chronological order. The features could link to more detailed information.

The idea has a lot of merit, but the main obstacle is that because the wiki is put together by the community, it would take quite a lot of time and energy to delve through 7 years of content and changes to bring things up to speed.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be worth it, but it would be a fairly daunting task I imagine

There's nothing stopping you from making a guide on your userspace; the wiki is a community resource. The reason there isn't a guide when you go to "Ranger" is that isn't what people looking up Ranger likely want. Right now it has links to skills, traits, and specializations which fits the majority of what you want a profession page for.

For example if your username on the wiki was the same, you could have https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/User:keenedge9675/Ranger_Guide

As far as added features , there's a top level overview on https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Release OR https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Game_updates for more detailed update notes

ranger was an example to illustrate the thought. Obviously there should be pages for every class with elite addendums.

Game updates would not be comprehensive, just the 'meaningful' changes for returning players and links for deeper info. It would need a distinct name other than 'gameUpdates'

::cringe:: Even the ubiquitous "Fastest way to level to 80" ought to have some coverage.

I'm not a writer, just a poor grammar programmer. I see these links as providing a top-level chart for people to find what they need. We probably already have content to flesh it out because our wiki is very thorough.

To follow up on what Infusion said, the wiki is a community resource and it's built by players like you. Some people edit, some people give feedback, some people fix our ever-growing code. You've got an idea, and we've got a place on the wiki for you to lay it out: [Wiki Community Portal](https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Guild_Wars_2_Wiki:Community_portal).

Now ideas are always better when they come with examples, so if there's a quick mock-up or flow chart of your idea, you'll have a greater chance of buy-in and support from other editors. Feel free to create a wiki account and do your rough draft in your User space as Infusion suggested. It doesn't have to be fancy or fleshed out, but I am curious as to what information you believe would help your fellow players.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to swing by [my wiki talk page](https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/User_talk:Greener) or join [our Discord server](https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Guild_Wars_2_Wiki:Discord).
