An hour in the life of an achievement hunter

Recommended Posts

When Guild wars 2 was designed, ArenaNet promised that the gameplay would not revolve around grinding. I think that Guild Wars 2 did an excellent job here and delivered quite well on this promise. Still, if you are an achievement hunter, you will come across some fairly grindy, but completely optional objectives from time to time. For example:

I present to you, the guide on the "Bridge Buster" and "No Road? No Problem!" (Edge of the mists) achievements. ;)

"Bridge Buster" is not a grindy achievement so much as "what happens when you try to complete an achievement for content after everyone has moved on to other things".

Conqueror is 10,000 matches not 10,000 ranked matches so it can go a bit faster with a custom arena. Although amusingly if it was ranked matches and assuming you played 8 hours a day, it would take more time to complete that achievement than to create a new person.

There is also champion brawler. That one is for ranked wins.

You Sir are correct, Edge of the mist was busy when people needed exp to hit lvl 80, now its pointless...

Edge of the Mist needs a purpose, it need working on! Its a beautiful place with zero purpose, its a shame!

On the other hand we have some quite prestigious achievements with useful rewards, that are meant and designed to take a week or longer. When I completed the Wayfarer's Henge, I was really happy how smooth everything went and that there was no camping (nothing like the orr-temple skritt with the kourna banner). I would like to have more achievements of that nature. The IG6417- and the Olmakhan Bandolier were also pretty awesome.

I am currently doing the Dauntless Commander achievement. The temple camping reminded me of Lineage 2 and the subclass/noblesses quests, where you literally had to camp a spot for hours (baium = days). Luckyly it was not THAT bad. But I am no longer a teenager and cannot spend so much time waiting for nothing. Even when I am on vacation. So a lot of times I had to do RL stuff, returned and realized I just missed the temple-defense-event. Yesterday I completed the medals and now I am on the 500 currency grind, which will take me weeks. Yesterday I've met a guy in Kourna who claimed to have farmed 500 in two days. Not going to do that.

Achievements which are meant to be completed over an extended period of time are a very nice thing. But as soon as it involves camping/grinding anything, the fun is gone.

Those are nothing compared to the original wvw ones. Like kill 1 milion dolyaks. Escort 2.5million of them etc.

Just to clear things up a bit: I did not mean to complain with this thread. More a bit of self-awareness that the life of an achievement hunter can be a bit silly from time to time. There indeed are other achievements that require much, much more grind or repetition, including most of the WvW ones.

Indeed, to grind out the original "Yakslapper" would be more along the lines of "a century in the life of an achievement hunter".

Agreed on that. I don't mind things that take time, if there's always "something" I can chip away on actively when my RL schedule grants me some play time. But if I logon and can't proceed because a certain event isn't up, that is frustrating.
