They are just a lucky byproducts of people killing mobs for other reasons (for example, some valuable _common_ drops_). It's just that average players have practically _no_ other reason to harvest mussels they are like yellow mobs here. Yes, they can drop a precursor (pearl), but almost noone is going to go out of their way to kill (harvest) them.

Not sure if you intended it, but precursors are a perfect example, analogous to the mussels. Best source isn't mob drops, but the forge. The broad player base was busy complaining about them but anyone capable of doing an expected value calculation could make tons of gold in the earlier years of the game by forging precursors from bought exotics or rares. Drop rates from forging exotics is on the order of 1% (1 in 139 according to this http://gw2profits.com/precursor.php), just about the same as pearls. Market has shifted, but it was good times.

Thanks again to everyone who skips mussel nodes and helps keep pearl prices high.

What you forget to mention is that it's again only on average. You needed a ton of gold already in order to profit from this method, because if you didn't, it was as easy to end up with no gold and no precursors. In fact, many people did end up doing exactly this - trying for a lucky precursor, and ending with nothing. That's the main problem with low % rng - too high variance for most players, meaning, that only those that are capable/willing on going farmmode on this can reasonably expect a profit. Casuals need not apply.

I can give you places where there are patches of Mussels for good farming opportunities.

1. Verdant Brink (highest concentration of them)

2. Auric Basin (sparse)

3. Bloodstone Fen

4. Crystal Desert

With Verdant Brink, there are several places I check, such as right next to the first WP, just north of that on a small river, slightly southeast of Pact Encampment WP in a cave with a Mastery Point that leads to Faren's area with Bongo the One-Eyed, at the Pact Encampment Waypoint in the little pool down there and by the shrooms just west/southwest of Mellaggan's Waypoint, along the hillside path. Auric Basin has them in a small lake north of the Champion Arrowhead HP and North of the Thistle HP among the Bristlebacks. Bloodstone Fen has a small amount, but nicely laid out at the top of the little river and down along it. Finally for Crystal Desert, they are in the lakes just outside the city to the east and one or two by the Ibolga's on the further eastern end of the map, plus at the final eastern WP leading to Elon Riverlands.

The Bloodstone Fen area also has a bunch of Jungle Plants.

Not exactly but there usually a few in the area under the airship in Bloodstone Fen. Draconis Mons also has a decent amount but none that are conveniently grouped together.

Yeah it is really only Flax that has farms, likely due to the fact that there is a much larger scope of necessity within the game for them.

The only larger congregation of mussels that I have seen is the VB patch leading upto the froggy village. Aside from that its really just kind of sporadic placements around watery areas on maps from HoT onwards. Same with Jungle plants and sawgill shrooms.

BSF does have a few more Jungle plants in a smaller are than most plants, which is handily placed amongst mussels, wood and bloodstone crystal nodes, aside from that its just a case of explore and hope, then really hope when you stumble across one and decide to gather it.
