Which expansion did you like the most, HoT or PoF?

Recommended Posts

HoT, although I hated it at first. And I still dislike TD. But gliding is still amazing, and has saved me many times. The metas are still fun too.

Mounts are enjoyable, but the desert is just not as beautiful as the jungle. Plus there are fewer places to stop and enjoy the view (or check the map) without being attacked by some fairly vicious critters.

I couldn't see the game having continued popularity without both. Though I enjoyed HOT more, the specs, the GHs, the maps and even DBL, there are things from POF that made the game more fluid in my opinion and having experienced the package I just don't see 1 working without the other.

HoT because it's more group-focused, exactly what a massively multiplayer game should be (map-wide meta events, champion hero points). Also, I love anything that has to do with the Sylvari (I really enjoyed the story).

PoF feels like a single-player borefest. Story, Firebrand and mounts are great but the expansion lacks repeatable open world content.

Heart of thorns brought the sense of adventure, the sense of danger where you had to be on your toes at all times. It was almost a tomb raideresque sense of discovery and mystery as you unlocked further areas into the jungle.

Path of fire was a boring slog through flat open world maps to placate those who said HOT was too hard.

It's a really tough call for me.

I want to say PoF, I really do. I think it's Story is a lot better and unlike HoT, it didn't have maps like TD which I despised.

But the sense of exploration and wonder was so much superior in HoT for me than it was in PoF. The progression was also vastly superior.

I know a lot of people complained about how much time the masteries and specialisations took, as well as the difficulty of some things in HoT, which led to both of those things being nerfed in many ways, and while I didn't completely disagree with that, they maybe went a little bit too far with that, especially with how they moved towards PoF.

HoT being the first big expansion, and it being further back now, surely also gives it some nostalgia points, so it's really hard to tell. I'm also pretty tired of deserts.

I think the game over all was and is in a better place with PoF and beyond, but I do miss the sense of exploration and design for the future that came with HoT, be it Guild Features, long and deeper progression and a much needed increase in difficulty of the open world, even if that has mostly been nerfed out of it, as well as a focus on endgame content.

In a way HoT just felt more like an MMO than PoF, which from then on seemed to almost want to be a single player game, just without the strengths that come with that and suffering from MMO design instead.

PoF, aside from annoying aggro ranges, a lot of times felt like pretty basic open world, too afraid to challenge you, to make you have to ask for help and engage with other players, although it did have some fantastic moments of discovery that put HoT's high points to shame.

So in conclusion I can really only say that I hope there will be more expansions, and if there are, that they learned the right things from both HoT and PoF, so they can really show us all that GW2 can be.

It's a bit of a mixed bag to be honest. I prefer Renegade over Herald overall, so Elite Specialization wise, PoF improved on Revenant for me, which came with HoT. I like the mounts more than I like gliding, though I also enjoy the option to glide. Content wise, if we're talking meta events, I prefer Heart of Thorns, but I enjoy the maps of Path of Fire more. I can't really say I like one truly more than the other, but if I have to vote, I'll go with PoF I guess.

PoF maps are empty.

HoT maps aren't.

LWS4 maps are useless.

Lws3 maps are STILL useful.

Arenanet is sacrificing **the quality of the MMO** for the sake of singleplayer storytelling (which literally makes no sense btw...) and expanding the map with more zones that honestly don't have a reason to exist. This is why PoF loses to HoT by default. I am starting to think they, quite literally, wished this game was a SP/Co-op RPG (like Borderlands 2 etc), instead of an MMORPG. The only thing PoF had over HoT was a better first impression.

PoF really let you explore the third dimension of GW2, great specializations, and gliding is so much better than falling to your death.

HoT easier to get around, mounts are a nice addition, a couple new good specializations, and additional map content.

I'm just glad content is allowed everywhere.

Mounts and gliders even in the Core world encourage people to buy the expansions.
