gw2 laptop overheats

Recommended Posts

I game on laptops simply because I live in a very tiny apartment and don't have room for a bigger setup.

I keep my laptop propped up on one of those wire cooling racks you use for baking cookies to let air flow underneath it, and I make sure it has lots of room for the air from the vents to move freely (not backed up against a wall, for example). It's worked for me for almost 10 years now. :)

Fixed it for you ;)

I can second the rest, though I wouldn't suggest undervolting etc. to inexpirienced users. Also I have bad personal experience with ASUS (and especially their "support"), but then again, others don't, so I wish you the best of luck with your machine and that you may enjoy it for a long time!

Horror story to share, I can understand why but it seems to be a common theme with all companies, I had Alienware before then and getting a laptop I really wanted from them was a nightmare after I returned the other one I wasn't satisfied with. The communication was clunky and they owed me the second payment as I didn't even have it anymore.

As for Asus, their support worked out better than Dell, it was a really fast RMA to replace my audiojack because it got shorted following the cable that was in my bed, from the static that is. I decided to take the risk after 8 months and send it back, they did it nice and quick, almost too quick because it was missing thermal paste on both the cpu and gpu that would constantly overheat, I had to repaste it myself which I was afraid of because of the warranty but turns out they didn't even settle the sticker back in properly either. Lucky me, turned out I still got everything back in order with better paste that keeps it very very cold. I love this Laptop, it hits such a sweet spot and never overheats, even at extended max loads.

Sager from what I know is a good brand, I simply didn't have the possibility to do monthly payments because their plans are US only, they were considered before this Laptop I have here.

There are also external laptop fans that you can buy.

"cooling pads" which sit underneath the laptop and usually contain 2 or more fans

"cooling fans" which attach to the side exhaust port of your laptop

both can be found online at amazon or best buy

I've personally used a cooling pad on a laptop I used to have and it did work well for keeping the pc cool but it raised the laptop up off the desk to a point where it wasn't really that comfortable to use. No clue how effective the exhaust port fans are

Oh you are german i'm from netherlands :)but no i can't speak german. I bought that laptop at mediamarkt and i see germany also have that store. I hope i do get my money back i don't want store credit there is no laptop i want there. They don't have a newer hp and like all the game laptops are overpriced and i look them up and have also heat problems. And like a lot of gaming laptops i look up have heat problems. I have no idea what to buy. Axept if i do get my money back i can buy that newer hp laptop they say have better cooler system but i'm afraid i'm getting the same problem with gw2. Just want a laptop were i can play gw2 on without getting the heating problem but it's hard to find a good laptop.. i hate laptops now

However the cooling might be limited as typically found in mid-range laptop, you want to use ThrottleStop to undervolt and maybe underclock to reduce temps. Perhaps repaste it since what manufacturers use is beyond terrible after the first month, only do it if that doesn't affect your warranty.

I dock my Laptop whenever I'm home for gaming with a hub that has everything connected to one USB port while on the go a half keyboard with the same model of mouse that my desktop has but wireless.

I can't afford that laptop to expensive :( I m not going to pay more then 1200. But i see alot of gaming laptops around that price have heat problems so i have no idiea what laptop i should buy

I second this.

The external cooling that works best, depends on the laptop. If the fans blow the heat down (cooling pad) or out the side (attachment fan).

My laptop fans blow the heat out the back, so I use an Opolar external fan, it lowers my cpu temperature from 85'C to 63'C, when gaming.

I would suggest an external fan for most commercial laptops, if you're going to put them through heavy use.

It's not that hard, I don't know what your store options are there, which might limit section. However From HP, you want something from their Omen line, in the USA one good enough to play GW2 will start around $750, however most higher end PC stuff over the pond tends to cost significantly more. ASUS would be from their ROG line, Dell is their "G" gaming line and their Alienware line, Alienware however is significantly more than the G line etc etc, each brand has their own gaming oriented line.

Myself I have a HP Omen laptop, I don't use it for gaming, I used to travel for work alot and had an Alienware for that, but when it came time for a new one, I went with the Omen as I was looking for something that wouldn't over heat just watching videos or video editing, the Omen does great at this and I have played a number of games on it including GW2 and it does fine and you can change fan profiles on your own, it can get loud, but it cools quiet well. It has two larger heatsinks, two large fans and 4 heatpipes. The laptop is bulky in that it's about 3 times as thick as the other "normal" HP laptops.

Gotta remember, overheating means throttling of course. Most laptops do run at around 95C~ on the CPU during big loads which is within operating temperature, not to worry. This is why base clocks are usually low while boosts are high.

If such temperatures tend to bother, laptops are likely not meant to be for you or those who share the same feeling. As a reminder for those new to laptops, the latest Alienware Area-51m with the 9900k basically operates at 100C at all time, which is ridiculous hence why lower end parts are a better choice when it comes to laptops.

Like said, there is ways to mitigate and improve temperatures still. Limiting the framerate/settings, underclocking/undervolting, repasting. Choosing something like OP is decent for today, although I would kick the GPU at least to GTX 1060. Keep looking up for laptops, if you see one that interests you, search it on https://www.notebookcheck.net/ to see how it stacks up.

My laptop even with all the benefits I gave it, still occasionally hits the 90C mark but much less often, as it used to be the average, now it's around 80C~. Most laptops also share the same heatpipes which contributes to the temps being so high, it's unavoidable as of currently. However don't worry, if you do commit, temps won't kill your system as fast as you may think, it will take years (Maybe even a full life time.) for the silicon to wear out if the machine runs as it was intended, regardless of the temperature.

The 2018 issues were due to fan profiles, you can change yourself, default just favored lower noise. HP also released an updated BIOS with a higher default fan speed on them to fix the issue.

I have the [15-dc0051nr](https://www.amazon.com/HP-Gaming-Laptop-Intel-NVIDIA/dp/B07DRP6D2R/ "15-dc0051nr"), which is the 2018 model. If they don't say anything more than "heat issues", I tend to ignore them. They should be able to provide info on what is happening, what core temps are, what fan RPM is, where and how the laptop is used, is thermal throttling happening etc etc.
