Darehk's quick end climbing price

As well as the other named sunspear exotics.

While expecting the price to slowly drop as people find them, complete them, the supply should catch up to the demand if ever so slowly. But the way the price is only increasing makes me think only more people are starting the collection than supply is generated.

While I'm all for time sinks, im not sure if this was the intended purpose, locking every collection behind a 80-100g collectiom..

There are copies of Darehk's at 122g at the time of writing

They'll likely address this soon, it doesn't seem like much thought went into design for this and as such i'd expect a rework or more achievements in future releases to reward them.

Just like i fully expect some of the collections to see a review of their per character acquisition methods as well.

Anet does this constantly, and only very rarely actually fix it. It's sad, because it would be so easy to just say "there aren't enough of these. Have some more." But they don't. It's not a problem that they get things wrong on reward balance, that happens. What makes it wrong is when they don't bother to fix it.

Several things have caused the prices to start rising recently:

* With PoF at its month anniversary, there are finally a lot of people taking the specialization collections seriously. That spikes the demand.

* A number of people have started posting about the low drop rates of the relevant named exotics and this has caused people to worry about getting theirs ever, let alone soon. That has raised people's willingness to spend.

* Several recent posts have suggested that rare unidentified gear was underpriced on the TP, allowing people to buy them, open, and sell the results for profit. (Price rose from ~55s before the posts to over 70s now, for rare unID gear.) Normally, this would generate an increase in supply, causing prices to fall. However, the amount of exotics, included named ones, is greatly affected by Magic Find and it looks as if people are opening it with below-optimal MF, which ends up reducing supply.

* Finally, because of the hype, people are also starting to hoard items, worrying about prices going up even more.

If things go as they have done with other collections, prices will continue to rise quickly for a bit... and then gradually start to fall. If you're not in rush, I recommend waiting.

My best guess is that ANet is okay with this turn of events. The current cost of crafting your own ascended weapon is around 50-60g and the cost of obtaining a specialization skin is a bit more. In contrast, the spec weapons from HoT were a bargain.

Add in the cost of the Mordant weapons needed and it is a more than "a bit".

I'm guessing that season 4 will still use unidentified drops, but it'll depend on how much

Hm =) I saw players doubting about ANet decisions many times. But your statement is a very subtle mode to suggest that the person deciding to put the collections in game is totally unaware of the game.

You may be right - why to use resources, time and effort to implement something having no utility? You can extend this statement to other inutile aspects of the game: legendary weapons and armors (not required in any aspect of the game), achievement points (you can play the game without AP - not required), ascendant gear (you have exotics, so ascendant is not required), mastery system (not required if you only play and don't want something special) etc - you can expand the list. Be careful, please, and let at least one aspect in the game not labeled as "not required". Because I think to label the entire GW2 as "not required" is a bit too drastic.

But, if you honestly consider that the collections are not required, I cannot understand your advice to farm for it. And also to **hope** (then, the hope is needed - a mastery for hope may be a good thing). A clarification of your position is needed, because advising the others to farm for a not required item/collection is not a very honest attitude. It looks more like trolling.

Those weapons have 2 different significant faucets: the chest of the first spear for completing the elonian weapon collection and random drops from either identifying unid gear or from new champ bags.

Most players got their chest of the first spear, which is limited to 1 per account, from the elonian weapon collection already and that supply flooded the market in the first few weeks. As you could select the weapon you will get, this faucet also mostly produced those 6 weapons that were needed for the specialisation collections and not many of the other 10 weapons.

The other faucet, from unid gear and champ bags, supplies them at random, so the distribution across all 16 weapons is more even than from the chest.

As more and more accounts open their chest of the first spear, that faucets diminishes and we will only rely on rng drops for supply, thats why the price is climbing.

If we didnt have the additional initial extra supply from the chest of the first spear and would have relied on rng drops only, those 6 weapons would have probably started trading at a value of a couple of hundred gold and then slowly diminish in value over time.

Anet has used supply models like this (flooding the market with 1-time only rewards per account) for various items/groups introduced with PoF.

The new elite specialisation runes are another good example:

Once you fully train one of the new elite specs, you are rewarded with a unique exotic armor piece that has a specialisation rune slotted. The new elite spec runes salvaged from these armor pieces flooded the market in the first couple of weeks to a degree that only 2-3 runes actually hit crafting value already (and need additional supply generated through crafting to meet demand).
