But is it worth splitting ressources into a second game that is basically a sci-fi graphics mod for an existing game? Usually, when a studio is producing a succsesful game, it doesn't make much sense to develop an equally big project on the side. Unless of course you're EA or Blizzard, i.e. have the resources to. I don't see how these threads provide serious food for thought. Sure, any input is food for thought, but these suggestions don't make much more sense to me than suggesting ANet should develop a GW2 themed FPS game as well as a card game, a free to play/pay to win mobile royal rumble game and a tetris ripoff. If they wanted to go full sci-fi with GW2, they would have set it 2000 years to the future of GW1 or would have developped a new IP. Sounds like they don't have enough Staffing to run 2 parallel development projects without massively cannibalizing one or both. Even if they hired a second crew to run that project, you still have the question of dependencies with the Engineering staff (because I'm assuming replicating the game model means recycling the engine for cost savings), and the question of who would fund the initial investment? Just ball parking, we're talking ~12mil for content creation (at a decently high quality bar)... unless the quality bar is higher, or involves big licensing deals. That number sounds small compared to whats been flung around for other games, but thats a pretty big budget for what essentially just a content pack for an existing engine. If you wanna go large content block like GW2 did at launch, maybe 22mil. Its hard to really pin down due to scale of economics being inconsistent between game companies. A new game by Anet would get my attention and I do like a lot of sci-fi/fantasy games and obviously like GW2, but sci-fi is a very broad category. I'd want to know more about the setting and plot, how similar is it to GW2 (wouldn't want an exact clone with different skins) and what are the differences. This game is fantasy. Just cause they mixed a bit of tech into the magic and swords mix, doesn't make it sci-fi. As for the OP. I don't think it's a good idea to make the same game in a different setting because it won't feel fresh to players who play this game. It'd have to be something completely new really.
