beating the last boss

To be specific, usually every story chapter has a 'boss' or 'final encounter'.

So, while you can skip bosses, they are considerably part of the progress.

But then again, every single boss can be beaten, with patience. Everytime they kill you, just resurrect, and run back. You'll be a bit weaker everytime, and your armor will break, but you can keep running back, and nibble away ANY bosses health indefenitely, and then repair your armor for free.

But you can do every story chapter up to the final boss, never completing anything, if you like.

And you can keep playing the next chapter without finishing the previous one. (but whether'd that be what you want, I wonder)

You can skip core and HoT story since the maps are accessible. For Pof you only have to do the first part of the story to get to Elona. After that the maps are open for exploring and map completion.

Of course there is the Living story side of it where you have to do the story to unlock those zones. So there you have to do more parts to at least get to the location but you don't have to finish the chapters.

However, you will have to do more of the story if you want to get masteries done. Things like mounts are unlocked along the story and the story also provides mastery points. So it really depends on what you want to achieve.

Don't forget it's a multiplayer can and you can always ask up to 5 people to come and help you. All the story steps are designed to be completed solo, but some of them are intended to be quite difficult (especially boss fights) and adding extra people can make it much easier.

And as other people said each storyline is stand-alone. You have to do the personal story (core game) and the HoT and PoF storylines in order - you can't skip one step and go onto the next one but you can skip the entire storyline if you want to. The Living Story seasons can be played in any order.
