Julischka Bean.7491
Hello everyone. Occasionally I read threads about how all the good names are taken and how people are having great difficulties finding a name. My solution was sticking "Crusader" in front of the name and calling it good. However, I was trying to find a five letter name for my Norn and I came across a fascinating site (no, it is not mine nor do I know the owners.) I am clueless how to add a link, but the name is "Best Little Baby" They have all sorts of ways to find a name...including a name scrambler. You input the letters you would like your name to have or a name that is taken, and the scrambler brings up every different combination of letters imaginable...after all..a name is just a combination of letters. Just do not capitalize the first letter of the name or you will come up with some very odd looking results...I say this from experience. What I did is I first invested in a name changer from the gem store, very handy thing to keep, then got a notebook and copied down all the letter combinations that caught my fancy. When I had enough, I went into the game and ran them through the name changer. Bingo. I found a wonderful name...wonderful to me at least. The name scrambler is found under "Name Games." You will see it on the site's homepage. Hope this helps somebody :) Lisa.
Eros.6801
Thank you for the good website, this will ease up my problem with naming my characters without spending 1 hour+ at the least. I also use this website for awhile now (4 years tbh) but it has Guild Wars name for all race as well, some would know this but ima put it here anyway, have fun. wanya.1697
well if the crusaders would have played bingo instead on going on a crusade we would have much less problems in various regions of the world today ;-p

(examples: Niamh(1) is Irish, and Iowerth(2) is Welsh) (1) Irish spelling makes internal sense, but frequently produces results that don't make a lot of sense if you don't know the rules. "Niamh" is pronounced "Neeve", not "Nee-am". (2) Welsh spelling also has oddities ("Caer" - fortress - is pronounced, as a Welsh word, as if it is spelled "Kyre" in Anglophone conventions, rather than "Cair" as you hear it in the game), but when you hear the in-game pronunciation of Iowerth, it's actually pretty close to correct. Danikat.8537
Good advice! I like using baby name sites to find names, and this one seems better than many I've seen because it has so many options instead of just lists of names. I'd be wary of using baby name sites to find names with a specific meaning however because there's a lot of names in the world which don't have a particular meaning other than being a name for various people, but I guess that doesn't look good on baby name sites so they'll often ascribe a meaning to it which may as well be randomly generated (and sometimes I suspect actually is). For example the name Anthony comes from the Roman family name Antonii, derived from Anton and going back to at least 450 BC and the original etymology is currently unknown and probably lost forever. (And may well go back to some parents, somewhere, thought it sounded good as a name.) But look Anthony up on baby name sites and you'll find everything from "high praiseworthy" to "flower" "priceless" and "romantic". > @"Illconceived Was Na.9781" said: > > @"Julischka Bean.7491" said: > > I am clueless how to add a link, but the name is "Best Little Baby" > Is this the site you meant? > https://www.bestlittlebaby.com/baby-name-generators.aspx > > **** > For example, for Sylvari, the Scotts or Irish generator might be helpful (here's a list of the randomized names) > > [scottish](https://www.bestlittlebaby.com/name-generator/scottish): > >! It's up to each person to decide if this is better/worse than what we'd come with on our own. One thing to bear in mind - that appears to be giving lists of modern Scottish or Irish names, which makes complete sense for a baby names site but may produce some anachronisms for GW2 (or other fantasy games), and may also miss some suitable names because they've fallen completely out of use. altermaven.7385
Some of the characters I name are often based on the race I use, so things familiar to that race might be put to mind. However, I have named characters that have broken these norms. "Farrah Hammsworth", on one, is from a discarded character idea and I wanted her to be a bit more tough, so I made her a norn. And if my signature doesn't give it away, I do have characters named after Autechre tracks/releases. But only because I can.

There's one website that really does its research: https://www.behindthename.com/ I've gotten a lot of my characters' names from it (mostly sylvari and norn).
