A certain amount of new players think they will level up fast if they take their Level 20 character to a high-level area and tap the kills of a higher level player, and don't realize the game is set up to discourage that. I once met a couple of players who had gotten into Dry Top by teleporting to someone, and were all the way up on that high plateau with the vista and quartz, where they were being slaughtered by Inquest. After I rezzed them about four times, they told me they were only Level 40, and asked me to escort them as far as the Prosperity waypoint so they could get back when they wanted. I didn't remember a path down that didn't involve gliding, so just had them jump, and rezzed them again at the bottom. As we made our way to the waypoint, they enthusiastically attacked every dust mite and devourer along the way, and with a Level 80 escorting them, they survived some of it. They were quite shocked and outraged when we reached the waypoint and they discovered they had gained NO XP at all for those kills.

They actually do have a miniscule chance to drop from creatures, and players in my guild have gotten them that way. The bit about Anet putting them on the TP is absurd.

Before they added collections, most came from the MF by tossing in 4 rares or 4 exotics. Since release I've gotten 5 precursors that way, and I usually try upconverts with lower value level 75+ rares & exotics about 3 to 5 times a week on average. I got 1 other pre from a PvP rank-up chest so they can come from those as well. So there are various ways to get them in game, but the odds are really, really low.

I remember needing to have Chest, Leg and Boots equiped to gain the base armor value of the character tho. Not sure if this have changed.

It is absurd. There are some things in the game I will never be able to do, there are things others will not be able to. There could be any number of reasons why someone cannot accomplish something; physical limitations, time constraints, etc, and even with trying over and over, I or they may still not complete it. To have someone automatically conclude that the reason is because they are not good or need to learn to play is dismissive and callous.

I don't have a problem with this when it's camps or towers, but when the monument or vet is up for a daily, let them finish, or assist (for the veteran creature).

Sorry to say, but then people in your guild were approached by anet and given precursors, with the instruction to pretend it dropped from a creature

That's just being silly. Mobs can drop them, or at least they did at one time. I haven't heard of anyone getting one from a mob drop recently, but at least during the first few years a few people got them that way.
